Synthesis of 2-ethylhexyl salicylate by transesterification with stannous oxalate as catalyst

Abstract: A sun-screening agent 2-ethylhexyl salicylate was synthesized by means of transesterification with stannous oxalate as catalyst, and methyl salicylate and iso-octanol as starting materials. The quality indices of the product were measured and tested. By the orthogonal test L9(34), the optimum conditions were determined as: catalyst dosage m(catalyst)/m(total reagents)=0.4%; m(methyl salicylate)︰m(iso-octanol)=1︰1.3; temperature at the end, 190 ℃; total reaction time, 7 h. The average conversion rate achieves 99.2% and the result is repeatable. Moreover, the quality indices of the product are close to ISP ESCALOL® 587.
